International Learning Opportunties

Want to teach abroad? Below, you will find resources to aid in your search for the kind of teaching experience that fits your needs.  Fulbright TGC (Teaching for Global Classrooms) offers the opportunity to learn global education and citizenship in a challenging year of study with an international teaching experience (see "Travel" to read my blog and experiences in Indonesia).  There are exciting opportunities in the other various Fulbright programs listed in this space.  Also, Go Abroad offers exciting long term assignments.

IREX The Fullbright TGC (Teaching for Global Classrooms)

The Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program (Fulbright TGC) is a year-long professional development opportunity for U.S. elementary, middle, and high school teachers to develop skills for preparing students for a competitive global economy. Fulbright TGC equips teachers to bring an international perspective to their schools through targeted training, experience abroad, and global collaboration.  The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by IREX.

Kevin Jones (below, second from left) of the Bronx, New York discusses his experience in the Teachers for Global Classrooms Program and how it inspired him to infuse his classroom with globally focused themes, ensuring that his students are culturally sensitive to the world. TGC is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State and is implemented by IREX. Click on the image below to view the short film.

Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program

Qualified teachers participate in a one-year (sometimes one-semester) direct exchange of positions with teachers from other countries during an academic year. Teachers may also attend seminars abroad during the summer.  Click on the image below for more information.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program places recent college graduates and young professionals as English teaching assistants in primary and secondary schools or universities overseas - improving foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the United States while increasing the U.S. student's own language skills and knowledge of the host country. ETAs may also pursue individual study/research plans in addition to their teaching responsibilities.  Click on the image below of more information.

Go Abroad

The Teach Abroad directory of GoAbroad.com is a database for teaching positions outside the U.S. with positions posted and updated by the schools themselves. Many organizations post listings for one year at a time and hire throughout the year. Paid teaching positions are generally for one year but occasionally summer camps in Asia, for example, hire teaching counselors. Most volunteer teaching positions have flexible commitments from a few weeks to a few months.  Click on the image below to explore the website.
