I cannot believe the week has come to an end, and I am sad to say goodbye to Nazar, his family, the students, teachers, as well as the province of South Kalimantan. As Nazar says, this is only goodbye for now. I also had a great time with Bob. We really connected this week. He's a great guy! That's the three buds above. Bob got Nazar a Red Sox shirt.
I felt really close to Nazar and the school community and hope to keep this relationship going when I return to school in the fall. For example, when we work on our Beowulf units next school year, I would like to develop the graphic novel lesson and include Nazar's classes. Last year, I had students choose a culture other than our own and create a parallel story. This time, they will use Indonesia, and I will connect with Nazar’s class. He was wondering how he could teach about American culture, and this may be a good way to make that happen. Each of us will need to present to the other using social media. I may use Padlet.
I want to use Skype to connect with Nazar and his students. I would love for us to share our stories with one another. We are both learning about language.
I also want to begin each class I teach next year with the tools necessary to becoming a global citizen. That way, all connections we make will be applied to the literature. I want to make my unit on Pride and Prejudice more global in nature. Perhaps sharing what we want from a marriage or relationship with students from Nazar’s class, may be a great way to open the unit.
Next, we're off to Jakarta to meet up with our IREX colleagues and share stories about our experiences.

Back in Jakarta. The view from my window of the Hotel Shangri-La.
